Markus Stolz, German-born and residing Athens for the last seven years, is a man on a mission to develop a market for the historically under-promoted Greek wines he loves. A self-styled blogger and marketing consultant to Greek wineries (he says his elloinos.com blog is independent of clients), Stolz ventured to New York last week to appear on Sirius XM’s “Wine & Web with Gary Vaynerchuk” broadcast and to network in a market he finds “more receptive” to Greek wines than Germany or the U.K., for example.

Among the varietals he recommends to wine lovers whose palates know only Retsina, are two whites: Assyrtiko, made on the extremely hot (in more ways than one) island of Santorini in extremely low yields, and Moschofilero, a cooler-climate, high-altitude grape with a flavor profile reminiscent of Muscat or Traminer.

His red picks are Agiorgitiko, an easy-drinking, fruit-forward wine he likens to a well made Gamay, and Xinomavro, which he says takes some getting used to because of its vegetal quality with ripe notes of tomato and raspberry. It’s capable of aging for a decade or more.

“In the $7 or $8 bottle it’s hard to find good quality in the U.S.,” he said. “But in the $10 to $25 the quality is strong.” Two Manhattan retailers to check out for selection and advice: Astor and Gotham. And in Astoria, Queens: Grand and Omega.
