Bodegas La Cartuja 2009 Priorat, Spain (15%)
$18 at Columbus Wines and Spirits
Finding a Priorat (Priorato) under $20 is not so hard; finding one worth drinking is another issue. Bodegas La Cartuja pulls if off. This mostly Garnacha and Mazuelo, with some added Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, starts you off with a rich concentrated purple in the glass. Ripe black cherry, berry and floral herbs in the nose, plus surprising rich fruity body, make it a great match with grilled meats.
