Modern 'ancient' Mourvedre
Written by Richard Vayda Thursday, 20 October 2011 07:29
Cline 2010 Ancient Vines Mourvedre, Costa County (14.5%)
$18 at Whole Foods
Fell in love with Mourvedre on my first conscious taste while running a Provençal restaurant many years ago. This Californian version exhibits a dark purple hue in the glass and has scents of wild red and blue berries, along with spice and a touch of earthiness. Although there might be no legal definition to “Ancient Vines,” the grapes reportedly come from some of the oldest Mourvedre in the state. The rather rich mouthfeel continues with plumy, dark cherry fruit, a little chocolate and soft-edged tannins. Delicious with seared lamb burgers.
