Chilean Syrah surprise

Morandé 2003 Syrah, Gran Reserva,
$14 at Puro
Became enamored with this immediately—especially at this price point. Dark brilliant purple, with scents of ripe red young intense berry fruit. Dense mature plum and some chocolate in the mouth, with nicely integrated firm tannins. The wine spends a reported 14 to 18 months in American oak, rounding out the flavors and peppery spice. Great with seared red meats and young hard cheeses—or easy cool-weather drinking.
